New social studies standards conflict with God’s directive

To the editor: It is good to have the freedom to express one’s thoughts. Some readers may not be aware of the required Minnesota social studies standards for public school students in grades K-12, beginning in the 2026 - 2027 school year. Social studies brings to mind studying the cultures of different people around the world. The new course has an additional section called “Ethnics”. In that section one of the subjects is “Identities”. Young children will learn “who they are”, considering their race, religion, individual values, culture, language and gender. These ...

Solve our problems by following the Constitution

To the editor: It’s truly sad to see how far from our Constitutional principles we have fallen as the self proclaimed “progressives” continue with their chants of this is what democracy looks like. Our Founders wrote a Constitution creating a republican form of government giving the people the power to govern themselves. How are we doing with that? Do you feel like you have any power over your own lives or are you abiding by rules and regulations thrust upon you by a unfriendly, tyrannical overlord? I fear it’s the latter. There was a time, not so long ago, when we would ...

20 mph plenty on city streets

To the editor: It is pathetic that our community has had another car-hitting-student-pedestrian-accident. Marshall needs to focus on creating safer ways for non-vehicled citizens to get around. Twenty (mph) is plenty and it’s long overdue for the city of Marshall to enact and enforce a 20 mph speed limit on all city streets. Lower travel speeds should be the norm rather than the exception. Lower travel speeds are safer and allow for better observation and reaction time for drivers. We’re doing something wrong when streets posted 30 (mph) have most cars traveling far ...

Don’t look away

To the editor: In this world of plenty, millions are suffering. How can Netanyahu and Trump carry out war and reckless bombing that have targeted schools, hospitals, the press, even ambulance workers sent to help the wounded? (If such atrocities are news to you, take a look at what has been happening in Gaza.) Trump holds microphones with no accountability followed by his demonizing. When a population is demonized over and over it is easier to look the other way not questioning what the leader says, easier to look the other way as children and families are swept up in ICE raids or ...

The illusion of political change

To the editor: In 2000, my father, then 95 years old, supported Ralph Nader for President. I learned this when we were visiting at Christmas. A few months earlier, I had shared information about the Constitution Party person that was running for president. I asked him why he chose Nader and his simple reply to me was irrefutable. He said he remembered every election since Woodrow Wilson; that the Republicans and Democrats have had control of the White House and/or the Congress, his entire life and that the political outcome doesn’t seem to change. His conclusion was that either the ...

Living with our choices

To the editor: Today I think positively of what will be. Some say the system is wrong. Some blame the government for their ills. One word comes to mind: responsibility. Responsibility, in itself has little to do with systems or governments. You guessed it. It has to do with the person. People make choices. Whatever our choices one thing is certain: we must live with our choices. Out of all this comes experience. Out of that comes knowledge. Knowing something out there is greater than you is the first step to wisdom. What will be is greater than what is. In the end its not what you ...
