To the editor: Why are we turning our country over (the land of the free and the home of the brave), actually gift wrapping it, and handing it over, to the likes of Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and the other elite top one percenters? It may be too late to ask the question of why it has come to this, but it’s not too late if we all stand together, heeding the words of local people like Darwin Dyce, Dr. Thomas J Williford and so many others, along with like-minded people all over the world, “we the people” will make our voices heard, gather our strength, and overcome this takeover ...

To the editor: I keep seeing Elon Musk and Donald Trump in the news doing their best to dismantle the functions of the federal government by cutting and freezing funding for the services that everyday Americans rely on. These billionaires and the ruling class want a small government not because of a sincere belief that small government is better for the people, but because they want to privatize it to make a profit off of everyday citizens. To the editor: The US isn’t in debt because working-class people have Social Security and Medicare. It is because billionaires are not paying their fair share. When the MAGA party (growing because of Republican silence) proposes a budget that cuts: $230 billion from SNAP/nutrition programs, $880 billion form healthcare funding, $330 billion from public education and workforce training/protection while it gives $4.5 trillion in tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, our country is on a downward spiral. King Donald and the Constitution

To the editor: In my letter published by The Independent on Wednesday (Feb. 19), I wrote “The Founders who wrote the U.S. Constitution had just liberated the Thirteen Colonies from the arbitrary acts of an unelected king and set up important checks on the chief executive to prevent a similar despot from rising in the United States.” As serendipity would have it, that same day President Trump wrote of himself on Truth Social, “Long live the king,” while on X he reposted his own image wearing a crown. Uproar over demanding accountability

To the editor: Have you ever considered what one trillion dollars might look like? It would be a stack of $100 bills that would cover a football field...end zone to end zone....to a depth of almost 8 feet high. When I graduated from High School in 1965 the Federal debt was $317 billion dollars. $100 bills stacked on 4x4x4 foot pallets would be a little over 39 and a half pallets. Use common sense on ‘anchor baby’ issue

To the editor: Re: Real story behind 14th Amendment Feb. 11 He is referencing “rulings” on specific cases that resolve that case “specifically.” It has no, repeat, no lawful enforceable extension of authority beyond that specific case, although it can be “referenced” in another case to perhaps influence an opinion in a future court case. In other words, an “opinion” by a judge or a decision by a court does not automatically become law. It took fifty years to discover that little tidbit with Roe V Wade.
