To the editor: The German calendar notes Nov. 9, 1938, as “Kristallnacht” or “the night of broken glass.” Until this night the Nazis had treated German Jews poorly, but no one said genocide. On this night Nazi gangs broke into Jewish businesses and destroyed everything breakable. Police did not interrupt the vandalism, mayors did not call for law and order, firemen did not extinguish fires in synagogues. Stand up for the U.S. Constitution

To the editor: Wednesday’s front page story about Lyon County being on the list of Minnesota counties defying federal immigration law led to mixed feelings for me. 1. I would be proud to be part of a community that stands up for underrepresented people and assists those in need. 2. I would not want to be in a county targeted by a petty little man with a napoleon complex and his minions. U.S. should act as civilized, caring country

To the editor: Watching police officers and soldiers go into Los Angeles businesses and come out with men in handcuffs, being taken away in vehicles reminds me of another time and place in history. The chaos and violent protests in both times and places do not seem to portray life in a civilized country. The men being taken from businesses in Los Angeles, were, I am thinking employed there. The problem is they have not entered our country legally. Shouldn’t the employers have the responsibility of asking to see evidence showing the person seeking work is a legal citizen? ...

Pollution: the biggest problem on earth

To the editor: Out of my opinion, the biggest problem on earth is pollution. If you have heard about the banned pollutant, CFC, and the hole in the ozone layer that was growing between the 1960’s and 1970’s was a huge problem. Wildfires is a problem. Although, controlled wildfires issued by the natural resource department in some areas, some are not government issued, and is accidental, or arson. Canada has been having wildfires lately. Some areas have this problem to, but it should not be allowed to be caused by non-authorized people. Another one is industrial factories. ...

Lack of funding for nursing homes impacts staffing and quality of care

Dear editor: As a nursing home administrator in 2025, I witness firsthand the devastating impact of our ongoing staffing crisis. Severe workforce shortages in long-term care have already stretched the industry’s ability to provide quality care to residents. Now, Gov. Walz’s proposed budget cuts nursing homes reimbursements by $700 million over four years. These budget cuts threaten to care that seniors and their families depend on. We need legislative leaders to understand that without adequate funding, we cannot offer competitive wages or benefits, leading to even greater ...

Where are we headed with Trump in charge?

To the Editor: New Republican tax cut bill has passed the house with a massive 5 trillion dollar tax cut for the top 1% earners. Then it cuts food stamps, cancer research, Medicare and Medicaid. Michelle Fischbach of course voted for this, I guess she isn’t pro-life if she thinks 14 million people losing medical care and food assistance for starving children aren’t important. Now Trump is giving $5 million tax payer dollars to the family of one of the insurrectionist, that attacked the capitol on Jan. 6 and put 200 capital police in the hospital.
