Voter ID: Stop trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist

To the editor:

Republicans all across the country are passing or attempting to pass legislation that will make it more difficult to vote in the guise of election integrity.

Minnesota is not exempt from this nationwide attack on our democratic process. While the Minnesota Senate’s voter ID bill may not look very nefarious, you can be sure that this is just the first act in a planned and orchestrated attempt at limiting certain populations from voting.

As Minnesotans we should be celebrating the fact that we routinely have the highest voter turnout among all states mainly due to our open and secure voting laws. Instead our Republican elected officials are wasting our time and muddying the waters with their talk about election integrity being a problem.

They are attempting to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. Don’t let Republican elected officials or the media fool you. Voter fraud in Minnesota is extremely rare as it is all throughout our country. Voter fraud is so rare that there is a better chance a person will be struck by lightning twice.

(Minn.) Sen. Gary Dahms (R-Redwood Falls) needs to stop attempting to fix a problem that doesn’t exist and focus on real issues instead.
