A call for the return of civility and respect for fellow Americans

The state of politics in the U.S. took another ugly turn last week with the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a popular conservative activist. He was killed at one of his debate events held at an Utah college.

He was allegedly killed by a young man who apparently immersed himself in the “dark corners of the internet,” according to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.

Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the political finger pointing to heat up. Unfortunately, it’s this kind of political rhetoric that spurs threats and more potential violent acts.

That is why we once again praise U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach, R-MN, for stepping up and denouncing the rhetoric of hate and violent acts against politicians and their allies.

“I’m absolutely heartbroken by the assassination of Charlie Kirk,”Fischbach announced in a Monday press release. “Charlie was a beloved father and husband, and a true leader for the conservative movement, who was killed while doing what he did best, bravely debating for his conservative beliefs in a public and open setting.”

Last June, after the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and the killing of her husband, Fischbach joined others in the Minnesota delegation — Democrats and Republicans — in condemning attacks on public servants.

“There is no place in our democracy for politically-motivated violence,” the statement read.

In her Monday release, Fischbach said the “horrific violence has been increasing over the years.”

While she mentioned the 2017 attempted murder of Republican leaders at a baseball field and assassination attempts on President Donald Trump, she also mentioned the killing of Hortman.

“I am absolutely heartbroken to see the rampant hatred and disregard for our fellow man that has taken hold in the dark corners of this country,” she said. “Part of what makes this country exceptional is that we are supposed to be able to hold strong beliefs freely and without fear. As we pray for Charlie Kirk’s family, I will also be praying for return to civility and respect for out fellow human beings.”

Amen to that.
