Short Takes
Don’t take right to vote for granted
THUMBS UP:
The news that voter turnout in Lyon County for Tuesday’s primary election was at a 30-year high is a positive development. Voting is an American principle and a basic democratic right that should not be taken for granted. The last presidential election and recent special elections in different states has proven that every vote counts. Several contests have been decided by the slimmest of margins.
Sheriff race will be a good one
THUMBS UP:
Expect a very competitive race for Lyon County Sheriff in November’s general election. Both Jim Marshall and Eric Wallen are well-qualified lawmen who would both make an outstanding sheriff. This will not be an easy decision for voters in the county.
4-H participation on way up
THUMBS UP:
The Yellow Medicine County board of commissioners heard a report Tuesday that 4-H participation is up. The importance and benefits of 4-H participation was highlighted during the various county fairs during the past two months. Young 4-Hers are learning more than taking care of livestock. These youngsters are gaining knowledge in various life skills that will benefit them for years to come.
Teachers deserve better
THUMBS DOWN:
It’s unfortunate that the negotiations between teachers and the Lynd Public Schools district are dragging out. Teachers are still working under an expired contract. The teachers — presently making $32,000 to $46,500 a year — deserve better.
