Born in New Jersey in 1936 to Donald D. McLaughlin and Beryl N.(Swanson), Kay returned to her family’s home state of Minnesota in her early years. After graduating from Lynd High School in 1954, Kay attended the University of Minnesota and met her fu-ture husband, Patrick R. Ahern.
