Trump says he ‘insisted’ to Netanyahu that US talks with Iran continue
WASHINGTON (AP) — Trump has met for around two hours with Israel’s prime minister and says he pushed to keep U.S. talks with Iran going on a new nuclear deal. Trump says he told Benjamin Netanyahu he prefers a deal if Iran agrees. Trump says the deal needs bans on nuclear weapons and missiles. Netanyahu’s office says he wants tougher limits, including on missiles and Iran’s support for Hamas and Hezbollah. The two sides held indirect talks in Oman on Friday. The article says tensions stay high after the June war and the U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Trump also says they discuss Gaza.
House GOP pushes strict proof-of-citizenship requirement for voters
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are rushing ahead with legislation that would impose strict new voter ID requirements ahead of the midterm elections. The bill, coming to a vote on Wednesday, is a Trump administration priority aimed at scrutinizing ballot access. But it faces blowback in the Senate. Called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE America Act, the legislation requires Americans to present proof of citizenship when they register to vote and to show a valid photo identification before they cast ballots. Republicans say it’s needed to prevent voter fraud. Democrats warn it will make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. Experts say voter fraud is extremely rare.
FBI combs through desert terrain in search for clues in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Fresh surveillance images from Nancy Guthrie’s porch the night she went missing, coupled with intense police activity across Arizona and the detention of a man had raised hopes that authorities were nearing a major break. By then the man was released after questioning, leaving it unclear Wednesday where the investigation stood into last week’s disappearance of Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. FBI agents fanned out across a neighborhood about a mile from Guthrie’s home on Wednesday morning, knocking on doors and searching through the dense desert terrain filled with cactus, bushes and boulders. Several hundred detectives and agents are now assigned to the investigation, which is expanding in the Tucson area, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said.
Murdaugh continues to insist he didn’t kill wife and son as he gets another day in court
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers are asking the South Carolina Supreme Court to overturn his murder convictions. They argue that the trial judge’s rulings and a biased court clerk prevented a fair trial. Murdaugh’s lawyers told the justices at Wednesday’s hearing that allowing evidence that Murdaugh stole from clients biased jurors into thinking he could be a killer, in a case that lacked any physical evidence linking him to the deaths of his wife and younger son. Even if the convictions are overturned, Murdaugh won’t get out of prison. He is serving a 40-year federal sentence for stealing $12 million from clients.
