Charges added in plot to kidnap governor

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Prosecutors added charges Wednesday against three of six people accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Adam Fox, Barry Croft Jr. and Daniel Harris conspired to use a weapon of mass destruction, namely a plan to blow up a bridge near Whitmer’s second home in northern Michigan to hinder police, according to an expanded indictment filed in federal court in Grand Rapids. The role of the bridge in the alleged plot was disclosed by authorities months ago. Croft and Harris also were charged with possession of an unregistered destructive device. Harris also faces a new charge of possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle. The three men, along with Kaleb Franks and Brandon Caserta, were arrested in October and indicted on a kidnapping conspiracy charge. They have pleaded not guilty. A sixth man, Ty Garbin, pleaded guilty in January.

Supreme Court weighs student’s case

WASHINGTON (AP) — A wary Supreme Court on Wednesday weighed whether public schools can discipline students for things they say off campus, worrying about overly restricting speech on the one hand and leaving educators powerless to deal with bullying on the other. The justices, hearing arguments in the case of a 14-year-old high school freshman’s Snapchat F-bombs, struggled to fit the need to protect students’ political and religious expression with the ability of schools to get at disruptive, even potentially dangerous, speech that occurs outside the school setting. In one of many examples members of the court offered, Justice Elena Kagan described boys who keep a sexually charged online ranking of girls based on their looks.

Deadly arrest carries echoes of Floyd case

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Police in Alameda, California, are under fire over the death of a Hispanic man who was pinned to the ground for more than five minutes in a video-recorded arrest that unfolded the same day a jury in Minneapolis began deliberating in the George Floyd case. Autopsy findings on the cause of death have not been released, but the family of 26-year-old Mario Gonzalez blamed police, accusing them on Tuesday of using excessive force and escalating what should have been a minor encounter with the unarmed man.

Texas man dies after attack by bees

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas (AP) — A Texas man died after going into cardiac arrest when he was attacked by an aggressive swarm of bees outside his home, authorities said. Thomas Hicks, 70, was mowing his lawn Monday when he was repeatedly stung by the bees outside his home in Breckenridge, about 130 miles west of Dallas, authorities said. The Breckenridge Fire Department said first responders faced “very aggressive bee activity” when they arrived at the home. Medics and firefighters attempted emergency care but Hicks died, the fire department said.

Bones dating back to ice age found

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A couple in Las Vegas said they will have to wait to continue building their pool after construction crews unearthed a set of bones dating back to Earth’s most recent ice age. Matt Perkins and his husband, who recently moved from Washington state to a newly built home in Nevada, said police and crime scene investigators showed up Monday at their home to analyze the bones.
