MHS concert band to host weekend show with military band

MARSHALL — The Marshall High School concert band will be hosting an honorable performance this Sunday, open to the public, collaborating with the Minnesota’s 34th Infantry “Red Bull” Military Band.

According to the Minnesota National Guard, the 34th Infantry Division “Red Bull” Band, which is based in Rosemount, provides musical entertainment to foster the support of citizens and continue building trust and confidence with the Army and national interests.

The band keeps up with an active schedule, including numerous free public performances throughout Minnesota, and has also been featured at various events like the state fair, at sporting events with the Vikings, Twins, Wild and Timberwolves, at the St. Paul Winter Carnival and more.

“Anytime you are able to participate with an ensemble of this caliber, it is exciting,” MHS Band Director Larry Petersen said. “We had a similar honor of sharing the stage with the Augustana University Band last spring, so for these students to have this honor two years in a row is really special.”

The band organization got its start in April of 1900, and has participated in various state and national campaigns, such as in both World Wars.

Additionally, the Minnesota’s 34th Infantry “Red Bull” Military Band performs throughout the year at other events like military ceremonies, for United States service members, and also for other public concerts, community events and presentations.

“The director of the band reached out to me and asked if we would be interested in hosting the band on their tour. He had been here as a guest director for our Southwest Minnesota Band Directors Association Honor Band a few years ago, and loved our facility and our students,” Petersen said of how the show came about. “The Red Bull band is currently applying for a military award, and will be recording their performance in our theater in hopes of securing consideration for the award.”

Concert goers can expect to hear and witness a plethora and variety of music that will leave an impression. Petersen noted that seeing a military band in person is an event people will want to see, as it doesn’t happen too frequently, and mentioned the group is “an extremely professional ensemble.”

Also, performing with the military band will offer a unique experience and memory for the high school concert band students as well.

“I think for me, I am always excited to hear really high caliber musicians performing their craft. It is incredibly inspiring,” Petersen said. “For the students, I think they are excited to share the stage with musicians of this caliber. It truly is an honor.”

The show will take place at the Marshall High School Theater on Sunday, and will be free admission to the public. The performance will begin at 4:30 p.m., and it will be for one show only.

“Military bands do not come to Marshall very often, so this opportunity is one that I hope many in the community will take advantage of,” Petersen said. “I know that they will be glad they did.”
