Reyes pleads not guilty to arson charges

MARSHALL — A man charged in connection with a Florence house fire has pleaded not guilty to charges of first degree arson, Lyon County District Court records said.

Court records said Moises Reyes, 29, entered a not guilty plea and asked for a speedy trial during a hearing Tuesday. The court also set dates for a settlement conference, a pre-trial hearing and a jury trial.

A criminal complaint alleges that Reyes set his mother’s house in Florence on fire. The complaint alleged that Reyes initially told law enforcement he was working outside the house when he noticed smoke coming from inside, and tried to put out the fire. However, after further questioning, Reyes told law enforcement he was “frustrated,” and had lit a gas can on fire and threw it on candles set up in his bedroom, the complaint alleged.

At Tuesday’s hearing, the court set an Oct. 21 date for a settlement conference in Reyes’ case. A pre-trial hearing was also set for Nov. 4, with jury trial dates on Nov. 13 and 14, court records said.
