Disaster assistance approved for YM County

Yellow Medicine County and other counties in western Minnesota will be getting state assistance after heavy rains in June.

On Friday, Gov. Tim Walz announced that emergency assistance was being authorized for areas of the state affected by storms and flooding that caused significant damage earlier this summer.

Heavy rainfall on June 25 caused flooding in Big Stone, Lac qui Parle, Yellow Medicine and Renville counties in western Minnesota, and Houston County in southeastern Minnesota.

“Communities across the state are still recovering from severe storms that brought destructive winds and rain in June,” Walz said in a news release. “As Minnesotans work tirelessly to rebuild, we are committed to providing the resources and partnership necessary to aid in critical recovery efforts.”

Funding and public assistance will help affected areas of Minnesota rebuild public infrastructure affected by the storms. The total amount of the assistance will be determined once documentation and recovery work is finished, the governor’s office said.

Other Minnesota counties, including Lyon County, have sought state aid after severe storms this summer. Lyon County declared two separate emergencies: one for the July rain event that caused flooding in Marshall, and one for the severe storm that caused wind damage around Lyon County in August.

Lyon County Emergency Manager Emily Coequyt said Friday that she did not know if Lyon County will be approved for state aid for the July storm.

“I have not heard yet that the governor has signed our declaration,” Coequyt said. “I know there were some (declarations) in front of ours, so hopefully we will hear something soon.”

The county is currently in the process of assessing the amount of damage caused by the August storms, Coequyt said. Lyon County will be conducting a preliminary damage assessment with Homeland Security and Emergency Management on Sept. 10.

If the reported damages from the August storm exceed the threshold of $59,634.84, Coequyt said she will submit an additional letter to the governor asking for state disaster assistance. Currently, damage estimated at $203,062.52 has been reported, she said.

Starting at $3.95/week.
