Rising ‘Art Stars’
MAFAC gallery show features art by area high school students
Artworks on display at the MAFAC Arts Center this month range from sculptures to pencil drawings and paintings. All were created by area high school students. A reception for the Lyon County High School Art Stars exhibit will be held Thursday evening in Marshall.
MARSHALL — The newest show at the MAFAC Arts Center has a little bit of everything – from pottery and sculpture, to pencil drawings and paintings. But the common thread connecting the artworks is that they were all created by area high school students.
“It’s a great way to showcase the talented art students in the area,” said Bruce Ahrendt, of the Marshall Area Fine Arts Council exhibition committee.
The annual Lyon County High School Art Stars show will be at the MAFAC Arts Center through May 10. A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Arts Center.
The High School Art Stars show has been an annual event at MAFAC for many years. Highlighting the art of area teens is one way to help share the diversity of art in Lyon County, Ahrendt said. MAFAC reaches out to high schools in Lyon County to seek student artwork. In past years, they’ve also included artworks by area homeschool students.
The show tries to feature artworks created by high school juniors and seniors, he said.
This year’s exhibit features about 15 different artists, including students from Marshall High School and Minneota High School, Ahrendt said. Students will be displaying some “top notch” art in a variety of different mediums.
He encouraged area residents to visit the exhibit at the Arts Center, on North Third Street in downtown Marshall. Visitors can see the show during the Arts Center’s regular hours, and Thursday’s reception will also include some light refreshments.
“It’s a good way to come and see what the kids are working on,” Ahrendt said. “It’s a good mix, and there are some talented kids.”
