MARSHALL — More than 2,100 Lyon County voters took part in presidential nomination primaries on Tuesday, according to unofficial vote totals. Donald Trump and Joe Biden each showed strong leads among Lyon County voters, with Trump receiving over 75% of votes in the Republican primary and Biden receiving over 80% of votes in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor primary.

A total of 2,181 Lyon County residents voted in the presidential primary out of 14,537 registered voters in the county, the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office said. That number was down from the 2020 presidential primary, which drew more than 2,500 Lyon County voters.

Minnesota was among 15 U.S. states holding presidential primaries on “Super Tuesday.” Voters taking part in the primary were given the chance to choose a presidential nominee from among candidates in one of the state’s major political parties. Voters had to select either a Republican, DFL or Legal Marijuana Now party ballot.

Out of a total of five Republican primary candidates, Trump received the majority of votes in Lyon County, at 1,265, unofficial totals said. Coming in second was Nikki Haley, with 365 votes. Ron DeSantis received 26 votes, and candidates Vivek Ramaswamy and Chris Christie each receiving fewer than 10 votes. There were six write-in votes.

In the DFL primary, Biden received the majority of votes in Lyon County, at 398, unofficial vote totals said. A total of 37 Lyon County DFL voters cast “Uncommitted” ballots. Dean Phillips received 25 votes, and Marianne Williamson received 16 votes. Candidates Jason Palmer, Eban Cambridge, Frankie Lozada, Cenk Uygur and Armando Perez-Serrato each received fewer than 10 votes. Gabriel Cornejo did not receive any votes. There were seven write-in votes.

A total of 11 Lyon County residents voted in the Legal Marijuana Now party primary. Of the five candidates on the ballot, Dennis Schuller received the most votes with four.

A sizable portion of the participation in Tuesday’s primary came from absentee and mail-in ballots. Out of Lyon County’s 33 voting precincts, 18 opted to use mail ballots instead of physical polling places this year.

As of the end of the day on March 4, a total of 868 absentee and mail ballots had been received at the Lyon County Auditor/Treasurer’s Office, said Lyon County Auditor/Treasurer Aurora Heard.

Tuesday’s primary was only Minnesota’s second presidential primary since 1992. In the 2020 presidential primary, 2,528 Lyon County residents cast votes out of a total of 13,544 registered voters.
