Fatal semi crash reported near Madison

MADISON — A South Dakota man was killed in a crash involving two semi trucks Sunday south of Madison, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

Steven Michael Schanning, 68, of Gary, S.D., died of injuries sustained in the crash, the State Patrol said. A Lake Benton man, Jonathan Edward Kallemeyn, 48, received non life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.

The crash was reported at 10:34 p.m., at the intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and 180th Street in Hamlin Township, Lac qui Parle County. A 2000 Peterbilt semi driven by Kallemeyn was entering Highway 75, while a 2000 International semi driven by Schanning was southbound on Highway 75. The two vehicles collided, the State Patrol said.

The Lac qui Parle County Sheriff’s Office, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office and Dawson Fire and Ambulance all responded at the crash scene.
