‘Strong storm system’ dumps nearly 7 inches of snow on Marshall

MARSHALL — A large winter storm dumped almost 7 inches of wet, sloppy snow on the Marshall area on Sunday — but that won’t the final total.

The National Weather Service said southwest Minnesota could see an additional 1 1/2 to 2 inches of snow through today.

“It’s a strong storm system for the overall area,” said Matthew Meyers, a meteorologist at the NWS office in Sioux Falls. As we get into Tuesday, he said, “We’ll be seeing the system kind of lifting up.” However, there would be chances for areas of blowing snow today, the NWS said.

Meyers said precipitation in the Marshall area would mainly stay snow. There could be more chances for mixed precipitation further to the south and east.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, 5 inches of snow had been reported in Marshall, the NWS said. The snow kept falling through Monday afternoon.

Wet, heavy snow meant slow going for people out shoveling driveways and sidewalks on Monday.

“I’m just making a path,” one Marshall resident said as she shoveled outside her home on South Fifth Street.

Heavy snow meant more work for snowplow crews as well.

“It takes a lot longer to do,” said Dean Coudron, Marshall public ways superintendent.

Marshall city crews were at work plowing streets starting at 4 a.m. Monday. Crews would go through the whole city once, and then go back for further cleanup, he said.

“Everything has been going good, it just takes time,” Coudron said.

Heavy snow takes more power and effort to plow and haul away, he said.

City crews would likely be back on the roads starting at 4 a.m. this morning, to check for streets that needed to be plowed again, he said.

The snowstorm did lead to some business closures in the Marshall area on Monday. Area schools also either canceled classes or held e-learning days.

Some area cities, including Balaton, Cottonwood and Minneota declared snow emergencies in response to the storm. Tickets may be issued to vehicles parked on the streets during the snow emergencies, area city staff said.

Balaton’s snow emergency will be in effect through today, and Minneota’s snow emergency will be in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday.

There were still some light chances for more precipitation ahead on Friday and Saturday, Meyers said. Daytime temperatures in the Marshall area are forecast to stay in the 20s and 30s this week before warming up to the low 40s on Sunday and Monday.
