Lyon Co. Board approves bid for new landfill cell

MARSHALL — Plans to build a new area for waste disposal at the Lyon County landfill will be moving forward next year.

This week, Lyon County commissioners voted to accept a construction bid for the project from Rachel Contracting.

Substantial completion for the project is projected by the end of August.

On Thursday, Lyon County Environmental Administrator Roger Schroeder said the landfill had received two bids for construction of the next phase of the landfill. There were a total of two bids, which came in from Rachel Contracting and Veit & Company, Schroeder said.

“The low bid does fit within our budget that we set for construction for this year. The contractor is familiar to us, and all of the documents that went along with the bid were satisfactory,” Schroeder said.

The low bid came in from Rachel Contracting, at about $2.39 million. The bid from Veit & Company came in at about $2.82 million.

“So, Rachel Contracting was low by about 400-some thousand dollars,” Schroeder said.

“On a bid that big, that’s pretty close, really,” said Commissioner Rick Anderson.

“Rachel Contracting are familiar to us,” Schroeder said. The company previously did a cell lining project at the landfill, he said. The engineering firm of Burns & McDonnell also recommended Rachel Contracting, he said.

A Burns & McDonnell representative said the project was expected to move quickly, with completion in August. Depending on how quickly the new landfill cell is certified by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the cell could be ready to collect trash in fall 2024.

Commissioners voted to accept the low bid from Rachel Contracting.
