Absentee voting on Marshall sales tax question to be at City Hall

MARSHALL — Absentee voters casting ballots on Marshall’s sales tax extension will do so at a new location this year. On Tuesday, members of the Marshall City Council took action that would allow the city to receive absentee ballots at the Marshall City Clerk’s office instead of the Lyon County Government Center.

“It would be a change for voters who typically vote absentee,” said Marshall City Administrator Sharon Hanson.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, city clerk Steven Anderson brought forward a resolution that would establish an Absentee Ballot Board for the special election on the sales tax extension. The special election asks whether the city should keep its current local sales tax in effect to raise funds for a new Aquatic Center.

Anderson said state election law required the city to establish a ballot board, “Because as of Sept. 22, the city of Marshall will be doing absentee balloting here at City Hall.”

The change in location came because this year is an “off-year” election, and the Lyon County Auditor’s Office does not have to administer absentee ballots, Anderson said. He said he believed Marshall’s special election wouldn’t be the only one receiving absentee ballots at a new location this year. The Lynd School District will also be receiving absentee ballots in an upcoming special election, Anderson said.

Anderson said the Minnesota Secretary of State has been notified that Marshall will be receiving absentee ballots at City Hall.

Absentee ballots for the Marshall special election should be brought to the Marshall city clerk’s office, located on the second floor of City Hall, Anderson said. The absentee voting period will be from Sept. 22 until Nov. 6. Absentee voting will also be available on Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at City Hall, he said.

Council members voted to pass a resolution establishing an absentee ballot board for the special election.
