Fairground updates discussed; transformer purchase delayed

MARSHALL — On Tuesday, Lyon County commissioners held off on approving a quote for a new electrical transformer at the county fairgrounds in Marshall. Commissioners said they wanted to wait and continue the planning process, rather than committing to the transformer proposal right away.

At the commissioners’ regular meeting, members of the Lyon County Fair Board brought forward a quote for possible electrical upgrades, including updated outlets and a new transformer, at the fairgrounds.

Power needs for campers and a carnival during the county fair were among the topics commissioners and the fair board talked about earlier this month. At that time, Commissioners Charlie Sanow and Gary Crowley had volunteered to be part of a group to gather input and narrow down possible fairground improvements. Some of the ideas commissioners discussed earlier this month ranged from building and restroom updates to whether the current fairground location had enough room.

On Tuesday, the fair board brought forward a quote from Coleman Electric for about $35,596 to install updates that would include a new transformer and electrical outlets for campers.

Sanow asked whether the fair board could possibly hold off on the proposal until after the fairground improvements group could meet. There might potentially be other fairground improvements that could tie into the electrical upgrade, he said.

Fair board members cautioned that part of the quote included an estimate from Marshall Municipal Utilities for transformer installation, and the estimate was only good for 2022.

In the end, commissioners directed the fair board to bring the proposal back after the fairground improvement meetings.

“Let’s put the whole package together and bring it,” Sanow said.

Starting at $3.95/week.
