Driver arrested after fatal Hwy. 23 crash

A Marshall man was taken into custody after a Friday night crash killed a Walnut Grove man and seriously injured two other people.

Kaw La, 43, of Marshall, was held at the Lyon County Jail for a court appearance on charges of criminal vehicular operation and criminal vehicular homicide, according to the Lyon County Jail’s in-custody list.

The crash was reported at 8:12 p.m. Friday, near Minnesota Highway 23 and 300th Street north of Marshall, the Minnesota State Patrol said. At the time of the crash, a 2021 Toyota Tundra driven by Kaw La was northbound on Highway 23, and a 2014 Buick Enclave driven by Shawn Michael Lemburg, 29, of Walnut Grove, was southbound. The two vehicles collided, the State Patrol said.

The State Patrol suspects alcohol was involved in the crash.

Lemburg was killed in the crash, and his passenger, 32-year-old Joshua Ronald Tolley of Walnut Grove, was taken to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls with life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said. A passenger in the Toyota, 30-year-old Nay Moo of Springdale, Wash., was also taken to Avera McKennan Hospital with life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.

La was taken to Avera Marshall Medical center with non life-threatening injuries.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Marshall Fire and Rescue, and North Memorial Ambulance all responded at the crash scene.
