MPS board gets update on planned career training center

MARSHALL — Members of the Marshall School Board heard more details of plans for a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center on Monday. Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Williams said the district is set to close on the land purchase for the center this week.

“CNA, automotive and welding will be the first classes we run,” Williams said. The district hopes to have students at the new location next fall, he said.

MPS is buying property located on North U.S. Highway 59 in Marshall. The property would give the school district space for hands-on career training, and allow them to add more kinds of training in addition to the current welding and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) programs at MATEC.

There are currently four existing buildings on the property, but not all of them would be usable right away, Williams said. One building has water damage on its south end, Williams said. MPS plans to remove part of the structure, and rebuild it as classroom space. The north side of that same building will house automotive and welding shop spaces, Williams said.

Another existing building on the property will likely need to be torn down because it doesn’t meet building code requirements for a school, Williams said. The remaining two buildings on the property will work well for storage for welding and auto shop equipment, and additional cold storage.

Later on, the cold storage building could become space for a construction trades lab, he said.

School board members plan on getting a closer look at the CTE site later this month. The board voted to start their Nov. 15 meeting at an earlier time to allow for a tour before conducting business. The meeting was moved to 4:30 p.m.
