Roundabout planned for future Hwy. 19 project

MARSHALL — After getting feedback from hundreds of area residents, the Minnesota Department of Transportation confirmed it will be moving forward with a roundabout and other safety updates to four intersections along Highway 19/College Drive in Marshall.

MnDOT said Tuesday that it has finished reviewing possible intersection improvements that would be part of a reconstruction of Highway 19 in 2025. Because the highway passes through downtown Marshall, MnDOT has been gathering input from community members over the past year as part of the reconstruction project’s design process.

More than 600 community members participated in a virtual open house for the project and took an online survey, MnDOT said.

In a Tuesday news release, MnDOT said it will plan on replacing the three-way intersection where College Drive and Country Club Drive meet with a roundabout. It will also convert two College Drive intersections — at Marvin Schwan Memorial Drive and at West Marshall Street — to right turn-only intersections.

The fourth intersection that will be changed in the Highway 19 project is the intersection of College Drive and Lyon Street. MnDOT had proposed removing the traffic lights at that intersection to help traffic flow, but the idea drew concerns from both local residents and Marshall city council members. City council members said the Lyon Street crosswalk was a key crossing for pedestrians to get to downtown Marshall, and some residents also questioned the removal of the lights.

In Tuesday’s news release, MnDOT said it will take out the traffic lights at the Lyon Street intersection, and replace them with stop signs on Lyon Street. However, MnDOT will also add bump-outs to shorten the distance people will have to cross to get across the road, and add flashing pedestrian beacons at the intersection.

More information on the Highway 19 reconstruction project, and the planned changes to intersections along the route, is available online at http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d8/projects/hwy19marshall.
