Marshall volleyball team under quarantine

Next three matches postponed

MARSHALL — The Marshall High School volleyball team will be under quarantine for two weeks after a close exposure to COVID-19, according to Marshall School District Superintendent Jeremy Williams.

Marshall, which has already played two matches this season, will have its next three matches postponed. The team was scheduled to hold its home opener on Thursday against Redwood Valley.

Williams said the positive case arose after the team’s match against Waseca on Saturday and the decision to quarantine was made in accordance with the guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Education and Department of Health.

“The positive case came after being on the bus on Saturday,” Williams said. “We’re following the MDH guidelines, which say if you’re within proximity of a positive case for more than 30 minutes, you’re considered close contact and need to quarantine.”

Williams added that the high school will continue to hold classes as normal.

“Anyone who has been in close contact with the positive case will need to quarantine. As far as classes, they will still go on as normal,” Williams said. “This is certainly not something we wanted to see, but we’ll continue to follow the guidelines to keep everyone safe.”

On Tuesday, the Department of Health reported four new positive cases of COVID-19 among Lyon County residents. The county had seen a spike of 22 new cases over the weekend, around the same time that West Side Elementary in Marshall reported it would be switching to distance learning over the next two weeks.

Williams said the decision to close West Side was a preventative measure after an increase in positive COVID-19 cases among school staff. While West Side students go to distance learning, the school building would be cleaned and sanitized, MPS said.

Lyon County has had a cumulative total of 842 COVID-19 cases, and five deaths. On Oct. 12, there were 347 Minnesota hospital beds in use by COVID-19 patients, and 134 intensive care beds, according to Minnesota’s COVID-19 response dashboard.
