18 area students compete in state speech tournament

Eighteen area students competed in the 2018 Minnesota State Class A Speech Tournament on Saturday at Apple Valley High School.

While some were close to making the cut, none of the area competitors were among the top eight who advanced into the state final round.

Murray County Central had eight state qualifiers in Jack Pierson (discussion), Megan Busman (great speeches), Jack Bleyenberg (humorous), Cameron Kresko (original oratory), Maggie Heezen (drama), Cale Engelkes (storytelling), Emily Kathman (storytelling) and Josie Harms (storytelling).

Tracy Area sent five speech members to this year’s state tournament: Sarita Hook (extemporaneous reading), Kaylee Campbell (extemporaneous reading), Madelyn Schumacher (discussion), Tristan Xiong (poetry) and Angelique Woodrich (prose).

Minneota had four student competitors in Cecilia Rabaey (creative expression), Brenden Kimpe (extemporaneous speaking), Jacob Haen (humorous) and Sean Dilley (informative speaking).

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Dajza Gilmore and Madison Witte competed at state in duo interpretation.
