MARSHALL — More than 140 dancers will grace the stage at Marshall High School on Sunday, showing all the hard work they’ve accomplished this fall.
The Marshall Academy of Dance will have a recital at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts at Marshall High School.
Breanna Thompson, owner of the Marshall Academy of Dance, said the recital will have 145 students performing jazz, tap, ballet, tumbling, hip hop, contemporary and pointe. Besides Thompson, dance teachers include Annie Deutz, Mackenzie Vogt, Emma Cole, Alexis Baynard and Alexa Dulas.
“We grew from last year, so that’s been fun,” Thompson said.
Cole has grown the tumbling program, Thompson said, while Deutz has been pushing technique, Vogt has been developing the younger dancers and Baynard and Dulas “bring a fun energy into the classrooms.”
The recital features all the class dances, what the students have been working on since fall, Thompson said. The students are ages 3-18, she added.
“It will be fun to showcase the different styles,” Thompson said. “Our dancers are so versatile.”
A dance that one of the pointe classes is doing is collaborative with a Christmas theme — reindeer, Dulas said.
“It’s just a fun dance,” said Ava Holmgren, one of the dancers.
Dulas teaches classes in tap and hip hop with Baynard. The tap class is performing “Up” by Olly Murs and Demi Lovato for the recital. She said the dancers do have some input, which are incorporated into the dance.
Dulas said Sunday’s recital is like a starting point showcase.
“I like that it’s showcasing the moves we’ve been working on all year,” added fellow dancer Abby Johnson.
Dancer Halle Roos said everyone is really supportive at the studio, and it’s fun to do the dances that Thompson and Deutz create.
Holmgren and Roos are also dance assistants. Holmgren said she enjoys seeing the younger dancers’ progress.
Roos said she also likes being a leader with the younger dancers.
“They can look up to you and see what they can eventually become,” Roos said.
“It’s fun to watch their personalities come out through dance,” Holmgren said. She said she also likes helping the younger kids learn their dances.
Thompson said the recital is a great opportunity to check out what the Marshall Academy of Dance has to offer. She will take new registrations for classes after Christmas break, Jan. 2.
Admission to the recital is $8 per person.
