South 5th/Saratoga intersection to close starting Monday

MARSHALL — Both state and city road construction projects in Marshall are continuing to make progress, contractor representatives said this week.

While paving is moving along on East College Drive, there is still another intersection closure planned as part of city construction on South Fifth Street.

The city of Marshall is warning drivers that the intersection of South Fifth Street and Saratoga Street will be closed starting Monday, as construction on South Fifth Street continues.

The Fifth and Saratoga Street intersection will close starting 7 a.m. and won’t reopen until Thursday morning. Motorists traveling on Saratoga Street will need to find alternate routes, the Marshall Public Works department announced Friday.

During a construction update this week, Erika Coudron of R and G Construction said work continues at two other major intersections: Main Street and College Drive, and Bruce Street and College Drive. Both intersections will remain closed to traffic while underground and paving work takes place.

“At Main Street, we were scheduled to get the concrete paving in the roadway done (Friday), and weather pending, we’re hopefully still shooting for that,” Coudron said. “All the curb and gutter is in, all the (traffic) signal bases have been poured.”

Coudron said contractors were also hoping to start putting in the “arms” of the traffic signals at the intersection next week. Once the signal arms were in place, there would also need to be a lot of wiring work done, she said.

At the Bruce Street intersection, crews were still doing underground utility work this week.

“We’ve got a couple of storm sewer crossings left, but the majority of the storm sewer has been installed and completed,” Coudron said.

It was possible that work on putting in new water mains could start Friday, Coudron said.

“Next week, we’ll hopefully get all the water main completed, the little bit of storm sewer that’s left, and then hopefully start grading and getting the road put back together,” she said.

This week, electrical work for street lights has also continued along College Drive between Main Street and the bridge near Independence Park, Coudron said.

“You probably won’t see any light stanchions set this week. Possibly the end of next week, you’ll start seeing the city lights going up in that stretch,” she said.

At the same time concrete paving work in the area was making “a lot of headway,” Coudron said. Concrete paving at the Lyon Street crossing was scheduled to be completed by the end of the week. It’s not yet certain when the current Redwood Street crossing area for East College Drive will close down for construction, Coudron said.

Starting at $3.95/week.
