County looking to upgrade Garvin Park bathrooms

MARSHALL — Improvements to facilities at Garvin Park have been a topic of discussion for Lyon County commissioners for a while. One planned update — new showers and bathrooms at the park’s upper campground — will hopefully be moving forward this fall.

At their regular meeting Tuesday, commissioners approved a request for bids for a new shower/bathroom facility at the upper campground.

Lyon County Environmental Administrator Roger Schroeder said he had made some changes to the request for bids, like adjusting the minimum building requirements.

“One of the changes was building size, materials and construction,” Schroeder said. The new set of requirements called for a shower/bathroom building similar to the one at the Twin Lakes Park campground, he said. The proposal calls for a total of four family-style or unisex shower and restroom units, including two ADA compliant units.

Other requirements included in the request for bids was that the bathroom design be engineered to resist winds of up 120 miles per hour, and that the bathroom units have easy-to-clean concrete finishes.

One question that commissioners discussed was whether to call for bids for prefabricated building, or allow local contractors to build one on site at the campground. In the end, they thought both should be allowed, but the bids would have to meet the same design specifications.

Schroeder said he planned to receive bids for the new campground bathrooms before the county board’s Oct. 17 meeting.

• In other business Tuesday, commissioners also considered proposals for improvements at the Lyon County Museum building in Marshall. Replacement of the museum’s boiler and heating system was included in the county’s capital improvement plan in 2015. Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg said the county had received two quotes for replacement of the heating system. Bisbee Plumbing and Heating had the lower quote, at $95,000.

Commissioners voted to accept the low quote.
