Sudan’s paramilitary killed hundreds at a hospital in Darfur, residents and aid workers say
CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s paramilitary forces have reportedly killed hundreds at a hospital, including patients, after seizing the provincial capital of North Darfur. The U.N., displaced residents, and aid workers are reporting this and other atrocities by the Rapid Support Forces. The World Health Organization says it is appalled by the reports of 460 people killed at Saudi Hospital. The Associated Press has not been able to independently confirm the hospital attack and death toll. The Sudan Doctors Network says the RSF killed everyone inside. Witnesses describe killings motivated by ethnic and political differences. Satellite imagery corroborates mass killings and targeted attacks on health facilities. Global outrage has followed, with calls for action to prevent further atrocities.
Israel’s military says ceasefire is back on as death toll from strikes in Gaza reaches 104
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel’s military says the ceasefire is back on in Gaza after it carried out heavy airstrikes overnight across the Palestinian territory. Local health officials in Gaza said on Wednesday that the strikes killed 104 people, including 66 women and children. They were the deadliest since the ceasefire began on Oct. 10 and marked the most serious challenge to the tenuous truce to date. Israel said its overnight strikes were in retaliation for the shooting and killing of an Israeli soldier in Rafah. Israel also accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire when the militant group this week handed over body parts that Israel said were partial remains of a hostage recovered earlier in the war.
Exit poll suggests Dutch election result too close to call, with center-left party slightly ahead
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — An exit poll published immediately after voting ended Wednesday in the Netherlands’ general election suggested the result is too close to call, with the center-left D66 narrowly ahead of the far-right party of anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders. The poll showed that D66 would win 27 seats, a rise of 18 compared to the 2023 election. Wilders’ Party for Freedom would lose 12 seats to finish at 25 seats, according to the poll published by national broadcaster NOS. Pollster IPSOS says that the exit poll was conducted at 65 polling stations and around 80,000 voters, using a method that in past Dutch elections has produced estimates very close to the final results.
Paris prosecutor says 2 suspects in the Louvre jewel heist admit their involvement
PARIS (AP) — A Paris prosecutor says two suspects in the Louvre jewel heist have admitted their involvement in the theft. They are believed to be the men who forced their way into the world’s most visited museum and took jewels valued at 88 million euros. Laure Beccuau told a news conference Wednesday that the two men arrested on Saturday face preliminary charges for theft committed by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. It took thieves less than eight minutes to steal the jewels in broad daylight on Oct. 19, shocking the world. The jewels have not been recovered.
