Australian police arrest 7 alleged teen extremists linked to stabbing of a bishop

SYDNEY (AP) — Australian police say they have arrested seven teenagers accused of following a violent extremist ideology in raids around Sydney to protect the community from a potential attack. They say the seven arrested Wednesday are part of a network that includes a 16-year-old boy who is accused of the stabbing of a bishop in a Sydney church last week. Five other teenagers were still being questioned late Wednesday by the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team. The same day, a judge extended a ban on social media platform X sharing video of the knife attack after hearing arguments in court.

Rush hour chaos in London as 5 military horses run amok

LONDON (AP) — Five military horses spooked by noise from a building site have bolted during routine exercises near Buckingham Palace in central London and ran loose through the heart of the city. They injured at least four people, collided with vehicles and caused chaos during the morning rush hour. Four soldiers were thrown off the horses and three of the troops were hospitalized with injuries. The horses were all captured shortly after and were taken back to the barracks in Hyde Park where they are undergoing medical tests. The horses are from the Household Cavalry, the ceremonial guard of the monarch and a feature of state functions in London.

Blast near a ship off Yemen may mark a new attack by Houthi rebels

JERUSALEM (AP) — A ship near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait has seen an explosion in the distance, marking what may be a new attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels through the crucial waterway for international trade. The explosion Wednesday, reported by the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, comes after a relative lull from the Houthis after they launched dozens of attacks on shipping in the region over Israel’s ongoing war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis did not immediately claim responsibility for the blast, but suspicion fell on the group as they’ve repeatedly targeted ships in the same area. It typically takes the Houthis several hours before acknowledging their assaults.

Local police said Wednesday that the victims were expected to survive after being taken to a hospital for treatment of stab wounds. Police didn’t disclose details of what happened at Amman Valley School in Ammanford in Carmarthenshire, or provide further information about the suspect. The school was locked down. U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Wales First Minister Vaughan Gething said they were shocked to learn of the attack.
