Hiring surge lifts economy — and Trump’s re-election chances

NEW YORK (AP) — The lowest unemployment rate in a half century. More than 260,000 new jobs. And higher hourly wages. “I’ll be running on the economy,” President Donald Trump declared on Friday. And why wouldn’t he? The day’s new round of sunny employment figures offered fresh evidence of a strong national economy — and a big political advantage for Trump just as the 2020 presidential campaign begins to intensify. Stocks are at or near record levels , too, as the president often notes. Democrats pointed to regional disparities in the new government report. And overall ...

US stocks end broadly higher on solid jobs report, earnings

A solid jobs report and company earnings spurred U.S. stocks broadly higher Friday, driving the S&P 500 to its second straight weekly gain. The Nasdaq composite hit an all-time high for the second time this week. The benchmark S&P 500 index closed less than 0.1% below the record high it reached on Tuesday. Stocks in the communications, industrial, financial and health care sectors also notched solid gains as traders cheered surprisingly good earnings from United States Steel, Weight Watchers and other ...

US economy grows at 3.2% rate in first quarter

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy grew at a solid 3.2% annual rate in the first three months of the year, a far better outcome than expected, overcoming a host of headwinds including global weakness, rising trade tensions and a partial government shutdown. However, about half the gain reflected two factors not expected to last — a big jump in stockpiling by businesses and a sharp ...

Stocks edged higher on Wall Street in late-afternoon trading Friday, placing the market on track to finish with its second all-time high this week. A late-afternoon flurry of buying helped nudge the benchmark S&P 500 and other indexes higher after spending much of the day hovering near their recent highs. The latest gains came as investors weighed a report showing solid U.S. economic growth and a mixed bag of corporate earnings reports. Small-company stocks rose much more than the rest of the market, which was on track to finish the week slightly higher. Gains in financial, ...

Amazon to bring 1-day delivery to Prime members

NEW YORK (AP) — Two-day delivery is going out of style. Amazon, which hooked shoppers on getting just about anything shipped in two days, said this week that it will soon promise one-day delivery for its U.S. Prime members on most items. The company hopes that cutting delivery times in half will make its $119-a-year Prime membership more attractive, since nearly every other online store offers free deliveries in two days. Amazon also can’t compete with Walmart and Target, where ordering online and picking up at a store is becoming more popular with shoppers. “It is a smart ...
