SMSU GOLD College to host kick-off event on Sept. 14

The fall kickoff session for GOLD College will be held in the William Whipple Gallery at SMSU on Wednesday, Sept. 14 starting at 10 a.m. The William Whipple Gallery is in the SMSU McFarland Library located in Bellows Academic at SMSU. The kickoff event will feature keynote speaker Christy Suprenant Riley speaking on “Don’t be afraid to dream big. You never know where your path will lead you.” Riley grew up near Slayton on a small farm where both her parents helped her appreciate a hard work ethic and how to think outside the box. Gold Rush Days Aug. 18-21 at SMSU

A new class of freshmen will arrive on campus starting Aug. 18 for the start of the Fall semester at Southwest Minnesota State University. Gold Rush Days serves as the new student orientation program and runs Aug. 18-21. This comprehensive program provides first-year students the opportunity to meet classmates while participating in activities to help prepare them for college life at SMSU. Thomsen Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Brooke Thomsen of Tyler was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Thomsen was initiated at South Dakota State University. Thomsen is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. ...

Kathman named to dean’s list at Hamline Emily Kathman of Slayton was named to the Hamline University College of Liberal Arts dean’s list for the fall 2021 term. Kathman was among 641 students to make the dean’s list in fall 2021. To qualify, students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum of 16 credit hours. Simpson graduates from the University of Iowa This spring, more than 5,100 University of Iowa undergraduate, graduate, and professional students earned their degrees. Amber Simpson of Marshall was among the students conferred their degrees. Simpson was a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences whose program of study was psychology. The degree awarded was a bachelor of arts.
