Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities at SMSU

This year, Southwest Minnesota State University will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday through an extended schedule of service opportunities. Organizers cited unpredictable January weather and low turnout as reasons for discontinuing the annual breakfast and programming previously scheduled on the third Monday of January. The change is intended to shift the focus on celebrating Dr. King’s legacy by service to the community. SMSU Theater to present ‘46 Plays for America’s First Ladies’

In keeping with this election season, SMSU Theater’s fall production is “46 Plays for America’s First Ladies” by Genevra Gallo-Bayiates, Sharon Greene, Chloe Johnston, Bilal Dardai and Andy Bayiates. Performances are Oct. 30 through Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are $10 and will be available only at the door. Seating is first-come, first-served. SWWC Conference for Young Artists Oct. 30 The SWWC Student Enrichment department wants to give kids the freedom to be creative and challenge their imagination at the Young Artists Conference. This conference gives students an opportunity to dabble in different areas of art, pursue a passion, and spark an interesting activity they’ve never tried before. SMSU to host INCLUSION traveling exhibit Sept. 9-23

Southwest Minnesota State University will host the traveling exhibit, INCLUSION, at the Library Plaza in Bellow Academic from Monday, Sept. 9 through Monday, Sept. 23. The INCLUSION exhibit features a series of storyboards that chronicle — from 1900 to the present — the story of a forgotten minority. The display illustrates the journey of Minnesotans with developmental disabilities and their families and tells of their struggles to increase independence, productivity, self-determination, integration, and inclusion. GOLD College kick-off event Sept. 4 at SMSU

The fall kick-off session for GOLD College will be held in the Conference Center Upper Level at SMSU at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4 . The kickoff event will feature keynote speaker: Lew Shaver, retired SMSU professor and wheelchair basketball coach. His presentation will focus on his recently published memoir “From the First Brick: It Changed My Life.” Shaver began teaching and coaching at SMSU in 1969 and spent 26 seasons as head coach of the SMSU wheelchair basketball team from 1969 to 1995.
