SMSU to host INCLUSION traveling exhibit Sept. 9-23

Southwest Minnesota State University will host the traveling exhibit, INCLUSION, at the Library Plaza in Bellow Academic from Monday, Sept. 9 through Monday, Sept. 23. The INCLUSION exhibit features a series of storyboards that chronicle — from 1900 to the present — the story of a forgotten minority. The display illustrates the journey of Minnesotans with developmental disabilities and their families and tells of their struggles to increase independence, productivity, self-determination, integration, and inclusion. St. Mary fall festival and raffle Sunday The Church of St. Mary in Cottonwood is having a fall festival and raffle Sunday. The event includes a country store, bingo, cake walk, an online auction and a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Meals are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 for students age 5-12 and children four and under are free. Takeouts are available. GOLD College kick-off event Sept. 4 at SMSU

The fall kick-off session for GOLD College will be held in the Conference Center Upper Level at SMSU at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4 . The kickoff event will feature keynote speaker: Lew Shaver, retired SMSU professor and wheelchair basketball coach. His presentation will focus on his recently published memoir “From the First Brick: It Changed My Life.” Shaver began teaching and coaching at SMSU in 1969 and spent 26 seasons as head coach of the SMSU wheelchair basketball team from 1969 to 1995. The SMSU Creative Writing and English Program will host Kevin Brockmeier on Monday, Sept. 16. He will be on campus visiting classes during the day and giving a public reading in the evening in Charter Hall 201 at 7 p.m. Brockmeier is the first guest of the visiting writer series for the 2024-25 academic year.
