Brass-a-palooza set for Saturday at SMSU

The SMSU Music Program will host Brass-a-palooza, a day-long workshop for brass players, on Saturday in the Fine Arts building at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The day of all things brass will feature guest trumpet player Mark Nelson from the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. The schedule will include brass choir rehearsals, a guest recital, a guest masterclass, and a finale concert. More than 120 years ago, my great-grandfather Alexander William Brooks Sr., his wife Mary Ann and their first three children crossed the Canadian border into Minnesota, riding the rails to Crookston, where they settled. Alex lived a long and prosperous life, fathering nine children, first with Mary, and then after her death, with his second wife, Emma. He lived until 1962, and was remembered by at least my older brother who wrote an adoring college freshman English essay about him. This year, Southwest Minnesota State University will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday through an extended schedule of service opportunities. Organizers cited unpredictable January weather and low turnout as reasons for discontinuing the annual breakfast and programming previously scheduled on the third Monday of January. I miss my brother Drew. Now that the rush of the holidays and the adrenaline of turning a new calendar year are over, I am beginning to acutely feel the loss of my older brother who passed away in early December. My brother and I weren’t “call-each-other-every-day” close, which the 12-year gap in age difference had much to do with, but we were still close nonetheless.
