BUFFALO LAKE — Marshall junior golfer Dayton Webskowski earned a spot in the state tournament for the second straight year after finishing sixth individually in the Girls Section 3AA Tournament at the Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake. The Tigers finished in third place overall as a team.

“On any given meet … There was going to be a girl that was going to have a bad round or not a great round, and there was another girl that was going to pick her up. It was always a revolving door,” Marshall girls golf coach Eric Novosad said. “We love being together. After the meets, we all just smile and we’re laughing. They are just a group of girls that really blended well together this year, and you can see that when they are out on the course. They were all rooting for each other.”

Webskowski finished the tournament with a 170, the lowest of Marshall, with an 18-over 90 on day one and 8-over 80 on Thursday in the tournament’s second and final day.

“Her and I pretty much walked the last eight holes together, and we just talked a lot about things and kept her very loose. We were laughing and having a good time,” Novosad said. “She went and played shot-for-shot, and she just executed really good on the backside … She just really was dialed in.”

Marshall finished with a 744 for third place collectively, just behind New Londson-Spicer’s 739 and Minnewaska Area’s first place finish of 638.

The Tigers shot 383 for third place on the first day of the tournament, and finished Thursday with a 361 second-place finish.

“We talked about our goal for the year was to hit 350, which we really wanted to do that, but we didn’t hit that today. We went back and thought about our best round, which was our first tournament of the year at the Marshall Invite [shot a 366 for first place],” Novosad said. “We came back today and we were like, ‘Hey, we just shot better than our first round of the year.’ … We managed to pick up seven strokes [on day two] on a really good New London team. We played more confident today.”

Along with Webskowski, Grace Rokeh finished second-best for the Tigers in 16th with a 191.

Maddi Panka followed in 27th for 203, while Isabella Gossen and Anna Thor placed 18th and 20th respectively.

“We really set the tone as to what our identity is like, what our strengths are, and we try to play to those strengths the best way that we could today,” Novosad said. “There’s going to be some negative here and there, but you can’t dwell on that … From the get-go when we were driving to the meet today, they were just focused, they were relaxed and they were comfortable. It was fun to watch them.”

Marshall’s lone senior Ali Pederson finished the tournament in 17th place with a 193.

“Marshall is really going to miss her grit and her attitude toward sports,” Novosad said. “She is a three-sport athlete, and she was a type of player that cares about Marshall sports, and she was all-in as being the ultimate teammate … I told her, ‘I hope she takes that with herself as she goes off into college and life in general, and don’t lose that, because that is going to be amazing for you in the future.’ That was our moment at the end of the meet today.”

The Class AA golf tournament is scheduled to take place on June 10 and 11 in Jordan at Ridges at Sand Creek golf course.

Starting at $3.95/week.
