SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: Mustangs open outdoor season with strong showing in Illinois

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s and men’s track & field teams opened its outdoor season Saturday with several first place finishes at the Augustana College Open.

On the women’s side, Rebecca Manteuffel won both the shot put and discus to pace the Mustangs. She won the shot put with a toss of 13.31m, while she broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 48.97m.

Skyler Jacobson placed fifth out of more than 40 runners in the 800 meters crossing the line at 2:30.47.

Nora King finished seventh in the discus at 39.52m and was also ninth in the javelin with a mark of 31.60m.

For the SMSU men’s team, Kyle Felling won the 400 meters with a time of 50.45, while Connor Wigand placed second in the shot put at 15.48m.

Adarius Gallon also had a big day earning a third place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.68m.

SMSU’s 4×100 relay team of Gallon, Felling, Quadri Busari and Gabe Galamue placed first with a time of 42.69.

Southwest Minnesota State returns to action on Saturday, April 6, at the Dordt College Invite in Sioux Center, Iowa.
