SMSU SOFTBALL: Mustangs earn split with UMary

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (16-18, 11-11 NSIC) split with UMary (18-24, 9-13 NSIC) after falling 2-1 in Game 1 in eight innings and winning 3-1 in Game 2 on Friday afternoon in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Game 1

The Marauders were the first run on the board in the bottom of the third after the first batter walked, followed by two strikeouts before UMary’s Rebekkah Keller tripled to left field to score a runner.

The Mustangs tied the game up in the top of the seventh as Emma Grote singled to left field to get on base. Grote was brought in by double from Bailey Johnson.

With the game tied at 1-1, the Mustangs retired the first two batters with two swinging strikeouts before a fly ball to right field would send the game into extra innings.

SMSU returned in the top of the eighth and send fly balls all out to the outfield in the Mustangs chance to take a lead.

The Marauders started the inning with a double to center field before UMary’s Keller returned to hit an RBI single for the walk-off victory in extra innings.

SMSU’s Athena Golling tossed all seven innings with seven strikeouts.

Southwest Minnesota State had three players who recorded two hits.

Game 2

Game 2 was scoreless until the Mustangs came up in the top of the third as Madysson Schliinz opened the inning walked. Grote followed up with a single to the third baseman to put two runners before Johnson drove a single to center field to score both runners.

SMSU maintained a 2-0 lead until the top of the six when the Mustangs advanced their lead to 3-0 as Alex Reak opened the inning with a double to right center. Kristin Neumann came into pinch run for Reak and was brought in by a single from Madison Krog.

The Marauders responded in the bottom of the sixth when Kaitlyn Alvarado hit a solo homer to right center.

The Mustangs attempted to capitalize on their lead in the top of the seven with bases loaded but stranded all runners as a groundout to the pitcher would close the top of half of the seventh.

The Marauders clung their way back into the game with three consecutive hits to load the bases with one out. The Mustangs got a forceout at home to clear one bag before walking a batter would once again load the bases.

Shelby Crank went to the circle with bases loaded and two outs to get the final out with a groundout right to the circle to secure the 3-1 victory.

Megan Cull tossed six and 2/3 inning with four strikeouts to earn the victory. Cull received her first save this season.

Bailey Johnson led the Mustangs going 2-of-3 with two RBIs.

Southwest Minnesota State faces Minot State today at 12 and 2 p.m. in Minot, N.D. for the final twinbill of the weekend.
