SMSU TENNIS: Mustangs open NSIC play in Winona this weekend
MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s tennis team opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this weekend with a pair of matches in Winona.
SMSU, 5-2 overall, begins play on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. matchup versus Winona State and then closes the weekend with an 9 a.m. match versus Upper Iowa on Sunday. Both matches will take place at the Winona Tennis Center.
WSU is 0-1 overall and will face Minnesota State on Friday before taking on SMSU. UIU is 1-0 on the season and will take on MSU on Saturday afternoon.
SMSU is 13-30 all-time versus WSU and have lost 23 straight matches to the Warriors, including 8-1 last season. SMSU’s last win in the series came during the 1996 season.
SMSU defeated UIU, 6-3 last season, and is 2-12 all-time versus the Peacocks.
The Mustangs are coming off their first action of the 2019 spring season last weekend, finishing 1-2 at the two-day Missouri Western State Invite.
Cora Delich leads the team with six victories in singles play this season, while Hannah Starke is a perfect 5-0 in singles play. Delich and Gabby Potthoff has a team-leading seven wins combined in doubles action.
