SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU’s Reiss and Thomssen earn Player of the Week honors

MARSHALL – Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball players Taylor Reiss and Emma Thomssen earned some recognition for their play last week, with Reiss and Thomssen both getting NSIC Player of the Week honors while Reiss also was named the AVCA Division II Player of the Week.

BURNSVILLE – Southwest Minnesota State women’s volleyball team earned two NSIC Player of the Week honors announced on Monday afternoon. Thomssen earned Setter of the Week for the second time this season and Reiss earned Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, her third time this season, and her ninth overall.

Thomssen, a native of Lincoln, Neb. a graduate of Northeast High School, paced the Mustang offensive with an NSIC best .357 hitting percentage and an NSIC best 16.00 assists per set last week. She recorded 96 assists in two matches, 54 of which were against No. 1 Northern State, as SMSU recorded a .349 hitting percentage. This is Thomssen’s first season as SMSU’s primary setter. She has recorded 998 assists with a 12.32 assists per set average.

Reiss, a native of Taunton and a graduate of Minneota High School, recorded 49 kills with 8.17 kills per set average in SMSU’s sweeps over MSU Moorhead on Friday night and No. 1 Northern State on Saturday. Reiss recorded only three errors off 97 swings for a .474 hitting percentage. She recorded 20 kills against MSU Moorhead and 29 against top-ranked Northern. Reiss has a .327 season hitting percentage with 5.85 kills per set average. Reiss is nine kills shy of achieving 2,000 career kills, the second player in all-time history to do so. Reiss enters weekend play with 1,991 kills after last weekends’ performance.

Reiss is ranked second in kills (1,991) in the all-time career rankings. She is also second in kills per set (4.92), points (2,255.0), third in attack attempts (4846), third in points per set (5.57), seventh in attack percentage (.314), and seventh in service attempts (1,505).

SMSU went 2-0 this weekend sweeping both MSU Moorhead (25-19,25-11,25-17) and No. 1 Northern State (30-28,25-22,25-17).

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Reiss was named the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II National Player of the Week announced on Tuesday afternoon, for the second time this season.

It’s the fifth time Reiss has earned the weekly national award in her career, making Reiss the first ever player to take home national player of the week honors five times. The award comes the same week Reiss was named NSIC Offensive Player of the week for her second consecutive week, third time this season, and her eighth recognition as a Mustang.

Reiss is ranked second in kills (1,991) in the all-time career rankings. She is also second in kills per set (4.92), points (2,255.0), third in attack attempts (4846), third in points per set (5.57), seventh in attack percentage (.314), and seventh in service attempts (1,505).

She is the national leader in attacks per set (14.13), kills per set (5.85), points per set (6.53), total attacks (1,229), and total kills (509).

Reiss was named the NSIC Preseason Player of the year, she is the reigning two-time NSIC Offensive Player of the Year and last season’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player of the Year. She was also named to the 2017 NSIC Volleyball All-Tournament team.

Southwest Minnesota State (17-7, 12-4 NSIC) hosts Concordia-St. Paul (21-4, 15-1 NSIC) on Friday at 6 p.m. and Minnesota State (16-8, 9-7 NSIC) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
