MARSHALL - The No. 1S Marshall volleyball team defeated No. 2S Luverne 3-0 in the Section 3AA Tournament on Thursday in Pipestone, winning by scores of 25-17, 26-24 and 25-18.
Erica Jones led the way for the Tigers in kills with nine while Paige Andries and Logan Sherman both had eight and Kaylee Gossen and Whitney Schwartz each had seven. Jones also led in digs with 18 while Mia Schnaible had 16 and Sherman had 10. Sherman led in set assists with 23 while Rachel Schwarz had 19.
Marshall coach Dan Westby said the balanced offensive effort from his team proved to be the difference against the Cardinals.
"It was a hard-fought match," Westby said. "The difference was we were balanced on offense and had six players with five or more kills. Anytime we can do that, it's pretty difficult for the other team."
Marshall (25-7) advances to the Section 3AA championship game and will face the No. 1 seed in the North in Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta on Saturday at 6 p.m. at SMSU. Westby said their biggest takeaway will be to clean up their mistakes and limit their hitting errors.
"We need to clean up a few things, especially on the service line," Westby said. "We also had stretches where we made mistakes with our hitting, so we need to limit our hitting errors."
