PREP VOLLEYBALL: Area volleyball teams wrap up at Subway Classic

MARSHALL – The annual Subway Classic was held this weekend on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University. A total of 24 teams took part in the two-day tournament with MACCRAY taking home first place in the gold division.
MCC
The MCC Rebels won their pool Friday evening to advance to the gold division on Saturday.
The Rebels kicked off tournament play with a 2-1 victory over GFW. The Rebels dropped a back and forth opening set, 25-22. The Rebels bounced back to win the second set, 25-18.
Things didn't look great for the Rebels to start the third set. GFW jumped out to a 5-0 lead and appeared on their way to an easy third set victory. The Rebels went on a 11-4 run to take an 11-9 lead. The Rebels went onto win the third set, 15-11 to pick up the 2-1 match victory.
Montana Beckmann led the Rebels with four kills in the third set. Alyssa Groves recorded three kills. Amanda Muecke chipped in with two kills.
The Rebels fell to eventual Subway Classic champions, MACCRAY in the second round. The Wolverines defeated the Rebels, 2-0.
The Wolverines closed out the first set on a 20-5 run to take the opening set, 25-10. Groves led the Rebels with three kills.
MCC put up a fight in the second set, but the Wolverines closed out the match with a 25-19 victory. Beckmann and Vitorria Mazzoni both recorded two kills to lead the Rebels. Danielle Kuball recorded two aces.
MCC won the third place match against Worthington, 2-0.
Dawson-Boyd
The Blackjacks took home third place in the white division. The Blackjacks opened tournament play with a 2-0 victory over St. James.
The Blackjacks took the opening set 25-17. Karoline Dahl led the Blackjacks with five kills. Avery Bartunek did a bit of everything for the Blackjacks, recorded four kills, four aces and two blocks. Marty Bothun chipped in with three kills.
The second set was a back and forth affair, with the Blackjacks coming out on top, 26-24. The biggest lead for either team in the set was four.
Dahl led the Blackjacks with six kills. Bothun finished the second set with three kills and two aces. Bartunek recorded three kills.
In the second round the Blackjacks fell to Adrian, 2-1. The Dragons took the opening set, 25-18.
The Blackjacks bounced back to win the second set, 25-16. Bartunek led the Blackjacks with three kills. Bothun and Dahl both recorded two kills.
The Blackjacks controlled the momentum early in the third set, as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead. They led 9-6, before the Dragons went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead. Once the Dragons claimed they lead they never looked back as they went on to win the set, 15-11.
Dahl led the Blackjacks with two kills. Bothun recorded one kill and one ace.
The Blackjacks defeated Brandon/Evansville, 2-0 in the third place match. The first set was a back and forth affair, with the Blackjacks outlasting Brandon/Evansville, 25-22.
Bartunek led the Blackjacks with four kills. Lydia Aafedt recorded three aces. As a team the Blackjacks recorded five aces.
It was all Dawson-Boyd in the second set. The Blackjacks jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never let up, as they went on to win the set, 25-13.
Jalynn Popma recorded four aces. Bothun recorded three kills and one ace. Bartunek recorded two kills and two blocks.
RTR
The Russell-Tyler Ruthton Knights finished sixth in the gold division. They kicked off the day against MACCRAY and lost to the eventual champions, 2-0.
The Knights led 14-11 in the opening set, but couldn't keep the momentum going. The Wolverines closed out the set on a 14-2 run to win, 25-16.
Tina Haroldson led the Knights with three kills. Lexi Wendland chipped in with two kills. Chloe Hess finished with two blocks.
The second set was a back and forth affair with the Wolverines coming out on top, 25-21. Wendland led the Knights with four kills. Haroldson and Mya Christensen both recorded three kills.
RTR won their next match against GFW, 2-0. The Knights won the opening set and completed the sweep with a 25-20 second set victory.
Wendland and Haroldson both recorded five kills in the second set. Chloe Hess recorded one ace, one block and one kill.
The Knights lost the fifth place match to Cedar Mountain Comfrey, 2-1. CMC won the opening set, 25-22.
The Knights forced a third set by winning the second set, 25-19. Wendland led the Knights with eight kills. Haroldson recorded six kills.
RTR dropped the third set, 15-12. Wendland led RTR's attack with five kills. Haroldson recorded three kills and one ace.
Lakeview
The Lakeview Lakers finished third in the Brown division. The Lakers opened up the day with a 2-0 victory over Renville County West. The Lakers took the opening set, 25-18 and wrapped up the sweep with a 25-15 second set victory.
The Lakers fell to Martin County West, 2-0 in their next match. The Lakers dropped a thrilling first set, 27-25. MCW took the second set, 25-18.
In the third place match the Lakers defeated Litchfield, 2-0. It was all Lakeview in the opening set, with the Lakers winning, 25-14. The second set was a back and forth affair with the Lakers coming out on the winning end, 26-24.
WWG
The Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers finished eighth in the white division. The Chargers opened the day with a loss to Central Minnesota Christian. The Chargers then lost to Kimball, 2-0. In the seventh place match the Chargers fell victim to Springfield.
