PREP VOLLEYBALL: Lancers take out Lakers in sweep

Canby’s Abbey Pederson sets the ball during their match against Lakeview on Tuesday. The Lancers defeated the Lakers 3-0.

COTTONWOOD – It was all Canby, all the time Tuesday evening in Cottonwood. The Lancers overwhelmed the Lakeview Lakers in a straight set victory to pick up their ninth win of the season and to remain undefeated.

“We came out with a lot of intensity and determination,” Canby coach Amy Wagner said. “We did a great job of moving the ball. Lakeview fought hard, they just had a tough time figuring out where the ball was going to go.”

The Lancers led the Lakers 6-4 in the first set and went on a 9-1 run to open up a 15-5 lead. Once the Lancers got rolling their was no stopping them as they ran away from the Lakers, 25-11 to take the first set.

Abbey Pederson led the Lancers with five kills in the opening set. As a team the Lancers recorded five aces.

The second set was much like the first one, with the Lancers picking up the 25-12 victory. Alyssa Beckius led the Lancers with three kills in the second set. The Lancers recorded three aces in the second set.

Sierra Plotz recorded two kills for the Lakers in the second set.

The Lancers picked up the sweep of the Lancers by taking the third set, 25-15. The Lakers trailed 24-11, but didn’t roll over by going on a mini 4-0 run. Lakeview’s coach Hailey Osland said that run is something the Lakers can build on going into their next match.

“I just saw good fight,” Osland said. “They showed what they are capable of. We just have to be able to play like that all the time.”

The Lancers recorded nine aces in the third set. Wagner said she was pleased with her team’s aggressiveness at the service line.

“We just managed our errors better,” Wagner said. “We still had too many service errors, but they were offset by tough serves. We did a good job of getting them out of system and we had a lot of aces. I was really pleased with their performance.”

In total the Lancers finished the match with 17 aces. Osland said her team’s passing was not good enough.

“I was disappointed with our passers tonight,” Osland said. “We need to work on our passing. Our passing is inconsistent and that’s what we need to work on.”

Pederson finished the final set with four kills for the Lancers. Beckius chipped in with two kills and two aces. Brooke Nelson recorded three aces and two kills.

Stephanie Pickthorn recorded three kills and one ace for the Lakers in the final set. Baylee Larsen recorded two kills.

With the win the Lancers improved to 9-0. They’ll put their perfect record on the line Thursday at home when they host YME.

The loss drops the Lakers to 5-3-1. They’ll be back in action Thursday against Central Minnesota Christian.

“We play Central Minnesota Christian at their place,” Osland said. “We’ve already played them twice this year and they lost from last year. I’m hoping for a straight set victory.”
