PREP VOLLEYBALL: TMB’s Sydney Lanoue to continue her volleyball career at UMD

TRACY - Sydney Lanoue started playing volleyball when she was in third grade. It’s a sport that she’s grown to love over countless number of sets and matches. Luckily for Lanoue this fall won’t be the end of her volleyball career. The senior at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton recently announced that she has committed to continue her academic and athletic career at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
"UMD has a great volleyball program," Lanoue said. "They have been on top of the conference for a long time. The coaching staff there is great. I felt like it was a really good fit there for me. The town of Duluth is really beautiful. I just felt like I could see myself spending the next four years of my life there."
Lanoue hasn’t declared her major yet, but she knows that she wants to do something in the medical field when she graduates from UMD.
"I’m thinking I want to go into the medical field, but I’m not exactly sure what yet," Lanoue said. "I’m just looking at majoring in biology to start with."
Lanoue and the Panthers are coming off a season in which they reached the state tournament and finished with a 30-8 record. At the state tournament the Panthers took home the third place plaque. Lanoue recorded a team-leading, and area-leading 512 kills. She also recorded 353 digs.
Playing at the collegiate level will be a challenge that Lanoue is looking forward to facing head on.
"The tempo of play will be a big adjustment for me," Lanoue said. "They play much faster and quicker than we do at the high school level. It will be a fun challenge for me and something that I’ll get used to with a little bit of practice."
Senior year can be a stressful one for high schoolers with the looming question of what the future holds. Lanoue said her decision to attend UMD is a big weight off her shoulders as she gets ready for her final year as a TMB Panther.
"It was a relief for me," Lanoue said. "I know now where I’m going to college heading into my senior year. It takes a big weight off my shoulders. It takes away that stress that most people have during their senior year."
