MARSHALL - The Marshall M Club is proud to announce the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame 2017 inductees. Marshall High School has a long and proud tradition of excellence in all athletic programs and the M Club founded the Hall of Fame to recognize individuals for their outstanding accomplishments.
Four nomination categories have been established including athlete, coach, school administrator, and community member. Individuals, who through distinguished achievement excelled in one or more Marshall Public Schools athletic programs, demonstrating dedication, excellence, and honor in representing Marshall Public Schools and the community of Marshall, qualify for consideration. The 2017 class of Dave Ahmann, Mary Buysse-Byrne, Jason Garrow, and Martie Larsen epitomize the honor.
Dave Ahmann is a 1967 graduate of Marshall High School. A three sport standout athlete competing in football, basketball, and baseball, Ahmann earned three letters in each sport, and was chosen as the 1967 Bud Rose Award winner (male athlete of the year). After graduating from Southwest Minnesota State College where he played football for the Mustangs, Dave returned to teach and coach at Marshall High School. Ahmann served as head volleyball coach (1974-84 & 1987-90), head girls basketball coach (1974-80), and head boys basketball coach (1982-85). During his time as head volleyball coach, the Tigers won 11 conference championships, and made eight state tournament appearances, finishing as the class AA runner-up in 1979. The Tiger volleyball program had an overall record of 305-59 during Ahmann's tenure. Dave Ahmann was inducted into the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999.
Mary Buysee-Byrne graduated from MHS in 1981. As a senior, Mary was recognized as female athlete of the year, winning the 1981 Kaiser Award. As an athlete, she excelled in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. She was an eleven time letter-winner, and a 5 time all-Southwest Conference selection. She played on three SWC championship volleyball teams, two SWC champion basketball teams, and four SWC championship track and field teams. Following high school, Mary Buysse-Byrne had an outstanding collegiate career, playing volleyball for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, where she was a three-time all-Big 8 Conference selection. Buysee-Byrne returned to MHS as the head volleyball coach in 1991 and 1992, where she guided the Tigers to back to back SWC championships, and a 1992 MN Class AA state tournament runner-up finish. She also earned state coach of the year honors in 1992. She went on to coach volleyball at the collegiate level, first at South Dakota State, and then at North Carolina State.
Jason Garrow was a three-sport athlete at MHS, participating in football, basketball and baseball. Garrow graduated from MHS in 1988, after earning 8 varsity letters across his three sports, and being selected All-Southwest Conference honors once in football, twice in baseball,
and three times in basketball. Garrow was a team captain in all three sports, and was on conference championship teams five different times. Garrow led the Tiger basketball team to the Section 2AA Championship game twice and the Tigers were a combined 60-7 during Garrow's sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. Garrow was an all-state selection in both 1987 and 1988, and was a Minnesota Mr. Basketball finalist in 1988. He finished his career with 1,622 points, which is still a school record for boys basketball. Jason Garrow went on to play college basketball at Augustana College where he was a four-time letter winner, two-time all-North Central Conference selection, and finished his career with 1,704 points. Garrow was inducted into the Augustana Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
Martie Larsen is a 1980 graduate of Marshall High School. Larsen was a standout performer in both volleyball and basketball during her MHS career. She was the 1980 Kaiser Award winner (female athlete of the year), and earned four varsity letters in volleyball, along with three in basketball. Larsen was recognized as a part of the Southwest Conference All-Conference team once in basketball (79-80) and three times in volleyball ('77, '78, '79). She played in three MSHSL State Class AA volleyball tournaments, including being a part of the state runner-up team in 1979. After graduating from MHS, Martie went on to play volleyball for the Golden Gophers at the University of Minnesota. As a Gopher, Larsen earned four letters, and was voted the Most Valuable Player in the Big 10 Conference in 1983. She holds the Gopher record for most blocks in a match (13), and was the first Gopher in history to record a 20-20 (21 kills and 20 digs) vs. Wisconsin 11/5/83. Larsen was named to the Big 10 Conference All-Decade team for the 1980's.
The M Club Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony will take place at the Ramada Inn in Marshall on Saturday October 14, 2017. Social hour will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the dinner and ceremony to follow. Tickets are available through the high school office, or from M Club board members.
