PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Sueker fulfilling his dreams on and off the court at School of Mines

MARSHALL – Since he could remember, Mitchell Sueker has had a basketball in his hand. It’s a game that he fell in love with while playing in his driveway. Now the Marshall Tiger will get four more years to play the game he loves at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
“As soon as it started I’ve been playing. I think it was fourth grade,” Sueker said. “I’ve been playing in my driveway before that. I love everything about basketball. You get what you put into it. If you work hard at it you’re going to see results. I like being around all my teammates and the competitive nature of the game. I’ve been playing as long as I can remember. It means a lot to get this opportunity. It’s been a dream since I was a kid. I always knew that I wanted to play college basketball. Once I realized it was going to become a reality it was an awesome feeling.”
During his time at School of Mines, Sueker plans on majoring in electrical engineering. Once he graduates he plans on going to school to get his masters in biomedical engineering. Once Sueker visited the campus he knew it was a natural fit.
“I really like math and science. I want to be an engineer,” Sueker said. “The academic side of it really got me excited about the school. When I went on my visit I really liked all the coaches and guys on the team. It just felt like a natural fit.”
The Tigers are currently 19-2 and boast a starting frontcourt with three players standing 6’3″ or taller. Sueker checks in at 6’8″ and is a matchup nightmare for opposing teams. He’s currently averaging 14 points, four rebounds and two assists per game.
“Mitch has done a wonderful job of working through adversity,” Marshall head coach Travis Carroll said. “He missed almost all of his junior season. This summer he made great strides and got himself ready for his senior season. Mitch has the ability to defend multiple positions. Mitch also has ability to score near the basket, 15 feet away and from the 3-point line. If teams help on him, Mitch does a good job of finding the open man. He is a difficult matchup for the opposing teams to prepare for each game.”
Sueker only has four regular season games left as a Tiger, with three of those games taking place at Marshall High School. Which means Sueker only has three more opportunities to play in front of a community that he’ll miss dearly next year.
“I’ll miss all the people associated with Marshall,” Sueker said. “I’ll miss all my teammates and coaches. I’ll miss the fans and the community. I’ve just had a lot of fun being a Marshall Tiger.”
