Hockey, theater, and family fun in southwest Minnesota this weekend

Sports fans can watch hockey in July this weekend in Marshall, thanks to the Red Baron Arena and Expo. And if you’d like a break from the chill, there are also events ranging from stunt riding to family fun at Clarkfield’s Cardinal Days, and the Wilder Pageant in Walnut Grove.

Summer Showdown Hockey

The Marshall boys hockey team will be hosting the Summer Showdown hockey tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Red Baron Arena. Eight teams will compete, and the event is free all weekend for fans.

“It’s an exciting thing” to host the tournament, said Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce Director Brad Gruhot. It brings people into Marshall, and showcases the arena and expo. “It shows that the facility is being used, almost every weekend,” Gruhot said.

This will be the second year the Marshall hockey team has hosted the Summer Showdown.

The action will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, as Marshall faces off against Litchfield. Marshall will also play against Hutchinson at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, Marshall will play against Dodge County at 10 a.m., and against Simley at 2:30.

CARDINAL DAYS

Clarkfield Cardinal Days

There’s plenty of events the whole family can enjoy going on in Clarkfield this weekend. Cardinal Days will kick off bright and early on Saturday, with a medallion hunt starting at 8 a.m., and citywide garage sales. A car cruise will start at 9 a.m., followed by the Cardinal Days Parade at 11:30 a.m.

One of the main events Saturday will be the Big ATV Air Show, which features high-flying ATV and bike stunts. Fans will have two chances to see the show at the Clarkfield athletic field, which starts at 1 p.m. and again at 2:00. Admission is $5.

There will also be free events for kids, including bounce houses and swimming, throughout Saturday afternoon. Saturday night will finish up with a street dance featuring music by the HoneyBadgers.

WILDER PAGEANT

Fans of the “Little House” books have one last chance to see this year’s Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant. The pageant is performed every year on the banks of Plum Creek, just west of Walnut Grove, and tells the story of Wilder’s childhood experiences in Walnut Grove in the 1870s.

The final performance of the 2018 pageant is Saturday. The gates open at 7 p.m., and the pageant performance begins at 9:00.

Ticket and other information on the pageant can be found at walnutgrove.org/pageant.
