Flooding changes Marshall 4th celebrations

MARSHALL — Heavy rains this morning caused flooding at Marshall’s Independence Park — and there’s a chance for more thunderstorms on July 4. All of that means there will be some changes in Marshall’s Independence Day celebrations, said Scott VanDerMillen, director of Marshall Community Services.

The fireworks display is still scheduled for 10:15 p.m. in Independence Park, VanDerMillen said. However, the public is encouraged to park on hard surfaces only, he said. Other events, like the city band concert and free kites and flags, will be moved to Liberty Park at 7:30.

All of the other activities originally planned for Wednesday afternoon are being cancelled for safety VanDerMillen said.

Marshall received a total of 4.71 inches of rain last night and early this morning, leading to flooding around town. In Independence Park, grassy areas and playgrounds were swamped with rainwater, and the ponds in the park have swollen above their banks, lapping around park benches and covering walking trails in a few areas. Pedestrian bridges, which normally go over narrow connecting areas of the three ponds, could be seen partly under water.
