Hearing continued for sex sting suspect

MARSHALL — A Monday hearing for a Lynd man charged in connection with a prostitution sting in Springfield was continued until later this month, Brown County court records said.

Lawrence Depyper, 70, appeared in Brown County District Court Monday on charges of agreeing to hire a person under 18 for prostitution. A complaint alleges Depyper called and texted an undercover agent posing as a 16-year-old girl and was arrested in August after arriving at a designated location and being invited inside.

Court minutes said Depyper represented himself at the hearing. Depyper had applied for a public defender and had been denied. Depyper told the court he had received $5,000 and $10,000 quotes for attorneys but couldn’t afford to pay that much, court minutes said.

After discussion of Depyper’s income, the court said an attorney would be appointed for Depyper. However, he would be required to pay some costs, court minutes said.

Depyper said he wanted to contest the evidence in his case, court minutes said. The hearing was continued until Oct. 31.

Depyper was one of eight men arrested in connection with the sting operation. A second area man, Paul Lund, Jr., of Cottonwood, was also charged with agreeing to hire a person under 18 for prostitution. A criminal complaint alleges Lund responded to an online advertisement posted by law enforcement, and arrived at an undercover location at a residence in Brown County. Lund’s next hearing in Brown County District Court is scheduled for Nov. 16.
