Stop spam callers in their tracks

Dear Heloise: When telemarketers call your house, answer by spelling “stop” out loud. I thought that I would try this one day because this is what I get told when I receive spam text messages. Our phone rarely rings anymore. Hope this works for others! -- Kelly, in Anaheim, California Kelly, I usually say that I’m on the “Do Not Call” list and that if they call here again, I’ll report them now that I have their telephone number. It’s helped with some callers but not every caller. -- Heloise A SOAPY QUESTION Dear Heloise: I agree that using bar soap is better for the ...

Confronting a loved one with an eating disorder

Dear Annie: My husband confided to me that his mother had an eating disorder in the past, and there are possible signs she may have relapsed. When she visits us, she will exercise for hours daily, regularly disparage her physical appearance and skip meals claiming that she is “too bloated” to eat. I’m never sure what is the best way to respond to her self-criticism or behaviors. My husband states that she saw a therapist years ago for this problem but has not received any treatment since. He thinks she would be resistant to any further treatment, but I can’t figure out why. ...

Dear Heloise: My mother-in-law taught me a neat little trick that helped me get a fire started in my fireplace. She saved every toilet roll (the cardboard center) and all her laundry lint in a large plastic bag. Each year, when fall rolled around, we would stuff the toilet rolls with lint, packing it in nice and tight. When she wanted a fire, she would place three wooden logs in the fireplace and about four cardboard rolls that were stuffed under the logs; then she would light them. It got a fire going with very little effort, and we recycled the paper rolls and lint. When I started ...

Aftermath of dating a narcissist

Dear Annie: After dating a guy who turned out to be a narcissist, my question is, how can I heal? I’ve tried everything, and I’ve even felt like I’m over it and I’m OK, but then I have my days. It’s like grieving. I fell in love with this man, and feel like I let my guard down way too soon, only to be disappointed. Yes, he pursued me heavily, and it’s like after supporting me through nursing school, by the time it was close to my graduating, he started to become distant. I am so depressed off and on. I feel like I lost my best friend. What would you suggest? I’m no ...

Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend is Saturday, Jan. 17, through Monday, Jan. 19. During this three-day weekend, any Minnesota resident can go fishing for free if fishing with a child 15 years old or younger. Minnesotans 15 years old or younger don’t need fishing licenses any time of the year. “Ice fishing is fun. If you’ve ever considered it, this is a great winter to give ice fishing a try,” said Benji Kohn, volunteer mentor program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “Our weather this winter has generally been good for making ice on lakes across ...
