Removing calcium-scale deposits

Dear Heloise: I’m hoping you can help with my problem. My shower door frame has calcium scale in places, and the popular calcium and lime spray remover says not to use it on anodized aluminum. Do you have any hints on how to remove these deposits without doing any damage? Thank you. I read your column daily in the Press Enterprise. -- John, in Murrieta, California John, I recommend that you speak to someone at a hardware store concerning the calcium buildup in your shower. There are a number of products on the market that can do the job, but I know of no home-care solution that can ...

Being taught to do the right thing

Dear Heloise: Being a short person, I have asked a lot of taller people for help with getting products off the top shelf when shopping and have never been turned down. Most of the help has come from taller men as I am an older person with gray hair besides being short. Don’t get me wrong, there has been a lot of help that has come from women and younger people. That being said, these are the young ones who are being or have been taught to pitch in when needed. I, for one, have been very thankful. -- Barbara, in Virginia FINDING CONTACTS EASILY Dear Heloise: In a recent column, ...

Stepping back from toxic in-laws

Dear Annie: I’ve been happily married for more than 40 years. The one shadow on that happiness has been my relationship with my husband’s family, especially my mother-in-law. From the beginning, she has never seemed to like me. I honestly do not know why. Over the years, she has been dismissive and unkind, and I have usually stayed quiet to keep the peace. My two sisters-in-law also seem to dislike me. One actually told me she was jealous because I was “pretty,” which felt strange and childish. The other said she resented that my mother-in-law spent more time with our child ...

Abusive 20-year relationship must come to an end

Dear Annie: I have been with my fiance for 21 years, and we’ve been engaged for nine. We have three beautiful girls together, and he has two older kids from his previous marriage. He has always made me feel like second best. He always puts his ex’s feelings before mine and never takes what I say into consideration. I bring this up to him, and he says that I need to grow up. He tells me that my daughters and I should know our place as women. He caters to his other two kids all the time and listens to them, but when it comes to our girls, he tells them to stop being sissies and to ...

Never forget airplane etiquette

Dear Heloise: After spending 6 hours on a jet, I feel compelled to write. When flying, please don’t grab the seat in front of you to assist you when standing up. Stand by using your armrests for support. Also, your child kicking the seat in front of them is a no-no. -- Pat, via email STUFF IT Dear Heloise: I stuff my expensive purses and luxury handbags with butcher paper so that they will keep their shape. Do you have any other hints for storage? -- Jennifer J., in Houston Jennifer, before storing the bag, empty it completely and remove any dust or loose particles from it. ...
